As those of us who follow the travails of the public
school system know, this is a story with about 12 sides. Two weeks ago I wrote a post wherein I said
that teachers get paid for Spring and Winter break and that potential furlough
days could be taken out of those days. Unfortunately, I was given incorrect
information and I apologize. That is actually not the case.
According to one of our contacts at UTLA, the breaks are
considered unassigned days and are not paid. It seems that the proposed furlough
days on the table for next year are to be worked, but not paid. This would ensure that
instruction is not interrupted (which is good), but the teachers won’t get paid
for working those days (definitely NOT good).
There is a serious lack of trust between UTLA and LAUSD
and there is nothing that we as parents can do about it. It goes back a long, long way with missteps on
both sides. Unfortunately, it’s our kids
who are caught in the middle.
